Baritone feature
Regular 5, 4, 4, guitar, piano, bass and drums
Recorded on Days of Wine and Roses–Live at the Jazz Standard, this ballad, "The Willow" prominently features baritone. It was played beautifully by Scott Robinson on our recording. I wrote this piece as a dedication to Mel Lewis shortly before he died, and I always think of him when I hear it played. There's one small section with flutes throughout the top four reeds – and don't tell anyone I said it, but you can get by with less than perfect doubling, so don't let those doubles deter you. This piece is fairly easy to put together. It just requires a bari player with the confidence to take on a feature like this. Frank Kimbrough and Joe Locke also recorded this piece in a lovely small group form on their album, The Willow, released on Omnitone.
