Recorded on Days of Wine and Roses – Live at the Jazz Standard, "Lately" is a medium tempo, straight-ahead swing piece featuring piano (or bass) and trombone. At the time I wrote this piece (mid-1980's), I was regularly going down to hear Mel Lewis play with his band on Monday nights at the Village Vanguard. I attended at least every other Monday. It would be impossible to do that and not be influenced by Mel's drumming. This piece may be my only piece with a sax soli. It also has both soloists playing on the changes of the tune – and that's something that would soon change as I studied with Bob Brookmeyer. I wrote this piece at the very beginning of studying with Bob while also starting to write other pieces like, "Green Piece" and "Wyrgly." It was a powerful period, with powerful influences that created big shifts in my writing.
Along with your score download, with this purchase you'll receive a streamed video of me talking about the writing of this piece. Also, one day, decades after writing this piece, while cleaning old boxes of music, I found an early sketch of the tune, and I put that in this offer as well as a download.
