alto and muted trumpet
5 Saxes/4 Trumpets/4 trombones/4 rhythm, but also playable w/ 3 rds, 2 trpts and 1 trb plus rhythm.
"This n’ That" is a straight-ahead swing chart that was originally published by Kendor Music in 1991, and we are happy to re-release it here. "This n' That" has solo space for alto and muted trumpet, but you could feature almost anyone. I admit to loving this piece! It is relaxed and swinging if I do say so myself – easy, but not simple sounding. I try to make these easier pieces musically attractive to adult groups.
For all my easier-level band pieces, the instrumentation is typical big band: 5 saxes, (no doubles) 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 4 rhythm, but all charts can be played with as few as 3 saxes (alto, alto, tenor), 2 trumpets, 1 trombone and 3 rhythm. All rhythm parts are completely written out, but also have chord changes, so your rhythm section can try coming up with their own fills and comping, but be supported by some available ideas. The improvised solos are also written out with chord changes, so beginning improvisers may rely on the written lines provided or they may give their own improvised solo a try.
