Description

Recorded as the title piece on the album, Coming About, this piece (the 3rd movement of the suite "Scenes from Childhood") is a piece about sailing. We play this work frequently in concert to this day.

"Coming About" has two contrasting solos sections: the piano (Frank Kimbrough) goes through many key areas before passing off to the tenor solo (Rick Margitza). His solo toggles between two modes of G (dorian and phrygian) before the piece then sails into more harmonically active landscapes with the tutti ensemble. The piece culminates in a big ensemble section at the end that features contrary motion, giving the feeling of a sailboat leaning back and forth. This piece has a lot of what could be called "majestic" qualities.

I found a couple of very old sketches to this that I've included for you to download. I've also provided you with a video of me discussing the writing of this piece. You'll also receive streamed audio of both Frank and Rick talking about playing on this piece. Finally, this piece was inspired by places in my youth in and near Windom, MN, so I'm also giving you access to a video shot as the band drove on a bus through Windom, where we performed this work along with many other Windom-inspired pieces.
