Recorded on the 2nd of our two Data Lords CDs, “Look Up” is an uplifting piece, reminding us to look up, whether at the natural world or each other. When writing this, I entirely had Marshall Gilkes on trombone in mind. His facility, grace and range inspired a melody and piece that almost was bound to feel uplifting. The piece goes through a lot of key changes and has a lot to look at in terms of writing. I loved writing a long winding harmonic path for Marshall to fly through, finding ways to shift harmonic rhythm for interest. There is also a lot of full ensemble writing on this that maybe recalls some of my other pieces like “Coming About.” Something about “Look Up” maybe recalls a wide open landscape that I associate with my home in Minnesota.
